The «E-EC Index» is part of a series of digital research interfaces for the study of the «Encyclopaedia Cinematographica» (EC), a large-scale collection of science films. The «E-EC Index» makes all known entries of the EC collection accessible in an interactive, visual overview.
Content Note
Some of the films, especially in parts of the non-European ethnology, reproduce colonial or racist tropes in their titles, preview images, and meta data, e.g. when referring to the peoples and places depicted.
Data Source
The data for the index stems from the online AV-Portal of the Technische Informationsbibliothek Hannover (TIB), the German National Library of Science and Technology. The TIB took over the film collection from the former Institut für den Wissenschaftlichen Film (IWF, Institute for Scientific Film) after its closing in 2010.
Some films of the EC are not listed in the AV-Portal online. These entries are displayed as black tiles.
Thematic Sections
The EC collection was organized in three main thematic sections: biology (green), technical sciences (blue), and ethnology (orange). You can hide and show entries by their thematic section via the filter menu.
E-Numbers
The E-numbers are official signatures that were assigned by the IWF when a film was added to the EC collection. The order of the E-numbers may not represent the chronological order in which the films were produced. Some E-numbers are listed twice, e.g. when a film exists in two languages.
Copyright & Access Icons
The copyright and access status of each film in the AV-Portal of TIB Hannover is indicated by small icons. They may give a sense for the complex and inconsistent rights conditions around the films. The icons are further explained in the detail view when you select an entry.
Preview Images
Not all films have preview images available (grey entries). You will note a difference in the kinds of preview images used: While the majority show scenes from the film, others only contain the title card of a film, especially in the section of non-European ethnology. This may be indicative of copyright issues, but can also relate to the sensitivity of the film's subjects.
Interface & Controls
Via the menu bar on the right you can filter and sort the entries by different aspects. A combination of filters and sorting options allows to further investigate the structure of the collection.
The search function allows for a basic text search across titles, abstracts, keywords and authors of the films. English translations of titles or abstracts are not available for all films and a search with German search terms may yield more results in some cases. The search can be combined with filter and sorting options.
The layout options in the sidebar allow to change the grid size or switch to a layout that scales each entry according to its film length.
Tap on an entry to show more details. Tap the details area or the entry to hide it again.
A tap on the web link in the details area shows a QR-code that leads to the entry in the AV-Portal online. The arrow next to the link opens the entry in the browser.
In the bottom right corner you always see the number of entries currently visible (depending on the filter and search settings) and the total number of entries in the dataset for reference.
The reset button removes all filters and reverts view settings to the default.

Einige der Filme, vor allem in Teilen der aussereuropäischen Ethnologie, reproduzieren koloniale und rassistische Motive und Begriffe in ihren Titeln, Vorschaubildern und Metadaten, etwa in der Art wie Menschengruppen und Orte bezeichnet werden.
Datenquelle
Die Daten des Index stammen aus dem AV-Portal der Technischen Informationsbibliothek Hannover (TIB). Die TIB übernahm die Filmsammlung vom ehemaligen Institut für den Wissenschaftlichen Film (IWF) nach dessen Schliessung in 2010.
Einige der EC-Filme sind nicht im AV-Portal aufgeführt. Diese Einträge sind als schwarze Kacheln dargestellt.
Thematische Sektionen
Die EC-Sammlung war in drei thematische Sektionen gegliedert: Biologie (grün), Technische Wissenschaften (blau) und Ethnologie (orange). Mit dem Filter-Menü können Einträge nach thematischen Sektionen ein- und ausgeblendet werden.
E-Nummern
Die E-Nummern sind offizielle Signaturen, die vom IWF vergeben wurden, wenn ein Film in die EC aufgenommen wurde. Die Reihenfolge der E-Nummern spiegelt dabei nicht notwendigerweise die Chronologie wider, in der die Filme produziert wurden.
Lizenzen und Zugänglichkeit
Der lizenzrechtliche Status und die Zugänglichkeit der Filme im AV-Portal der TIB Hannover ist mit kleinen Symbolen markiert. Sie geben einen Eindruck von der teils komplizierten und inkonsistenten Rechtesituation der Filme. Die Symbole sind in der Detailansicht eines Eintrags genauer beschrieben.
Vorschaubilder
Nicht für alle Filme sind Vorschaubilder verfügbar (graue Einträge). In der Art der Vorschaubilder lassen sich Unterschiede erkennen: Während die meisten konkrete Szenen aus den Filmen abbilden, zeigen andere nur einen Ausschnitt der Titelsequenzen, vor allem in der Sammlung aussereuropäischer Ethnologie. Dies kann auf Urheberrechtsfragen hinweisen, aber auch ein Zeichen für die Sensibilität des Filminhalts sein.
Bedienung
Über die Menüleiste auf der rechten Seite lassen sich die Filme nach verschiedenen Aspekten filtern und sortieren. Über die Kombination von Filtern und Sortierungen lässt sich die Struktur der Sammlung genauer untersuchen.
Die Suchfunktion erlaubt eine einfache Textsuche innerhalb der Titel, Abstracts, Schlagworte und Autor*innen der Filme. Die Suche kann mit Filtern und Sortierungen kombiniert werden.
Die Darstellungsoptionen in der Seitenleiste erlauben die Rastergrösse einzustellen sowie zu einer Ansicht zu wechseln, in der die Einträge entsprechend ihrer Filmlänge skaliert werden.
Tippen auf einen Eintrag zeigt weitere Details zum Film. Tippen auf die Detailansicht oder den Eintrag blendet die Infos wieder aus.
Ein Tippen auf den Weblink in der Detailansicht zeigt einen QR-Code, der zum Eintrag im AV-Portal online führt. Über den Pfeil neben dem Link lässt sich Eintrag im Browser öffnen.
In der unteren rechten Ecke werden jeweils die Anzahl der aktuell sichtbaren Einträge dargestellt (je nach gewählten Filtern oder Suchanfragen) sowie die Gesamtzahl der Einträge im Datensatz zum Vergleich.
Der Reset-Button entfernt alle Filter und setzt die Darstellungsoptionen zurück.
